Traffic Rule Ideologies in India
Wheel is considered as one of the most revolutionary discovery in the history of mankind. The invention of vehicles followed after that. The idea behind the need for transportation was to abridge the time of carrying the goods to different places, for a faster development. People did develop; countries prospered. However, during these developments, a country with a population of 1.25 billion people, still struggled to achieve satisfactory growth despite incredible skills and manpower. Traffic in India has been a serious concern for the last 5 years or so. Wheels, which were thought of as growth boosters, turns out to be a growth blocker for the country.
In India, there are different types of people holding different types of vehicles, having altogether different ideologies. Even the dogs, cattle claim for their right to freedom for roaming freely on roads. Some people know rules, others don't understand even the 'R' of rules. Rest know the awful situation of traffic in India yet they somehow discovered a way out. A minority still holds proper traffic sense but they are as good as a water source in an arid desert.
Everyone is in hurry to reach to their respective destination. However, they forget that the approach to break the traffic rules in order to reach early actually delays them. In fact, it also delays all other people who follow the rules properly but can't make it to their destination because of being normal. Being normal is a curse in India. Lets take the situation of a normal man who strictly follow rules. Suppose, he stops his vehicle on a red light. He decides to proceed after the signal turns green, but wait, he couldn't. The rule breakers continued to cross the road despite their signal being red. In this process, the signal on the former's side again turns red and he remains there waiting endlessly. The man who started from his house in the morning remains on the signal till evening because of those who doesn't care about rules. Think of the appreciation he gets for his rule following attitude. This is weird but very serious. If this goes on for long, nothing can save this country from this toxic issue. Let's take another example. According to our lane system, the slow moving vehicles are supposed to be on the left sides while right lane is for the fast moving vehicles to enable overtaking. Unaware of this rule, people continue to drive in the rightmost lane and force the trailing vehicles to overtake from the left. Again, a rule follower had to break the rule because of a non-rule-follower. This fashion breaks the symmetry of the vehicles position on a road. An idea of democracy is to keep you all free but it gives so much freedom that we imprison ourselves.
To fight this serious issue, awareness is the basic key. People needs to co-operate with the government. Government needs to be more strict in order to maintain and incorporate traffic laws. License should only be made available after passing the traffic-based exam of highest level, installation of cameras, conducting workshops in engineering college to encourage students into developing innovative techniques and methods to handle the traffic situation in India, are some measures, which can help make the roads safe again.
The citizens need to come upfront to fix this issue so that the country develop under a safe environment. People need to understand that every life matters and that their contribution is much required. Only then, we can make this country a better and a bit sophisticated place to live.
